Memorial Day Tribute

by Nathan Hague on 05/28/2012

As I sit comfortably on my couch thankful for a day off I realize it’s not just any day off and it certainly isn’t a free day off. It came with a price, a very expensive price that I will never be able to pay back or show enough gratitude.

I realize this is a sports website and you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with sports?”

Truth is, a lot. It’s because of these great men and women in uniform that we can enjoy the great world of sports. They’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice which has given us the freedom to enjoy America’s pastime and other sports. Because these people sat on guard in fox holes, we’re able to sit and relax on our couches in front of the TV flipping back and forth between sporting events and whatever else might be shown on TV.

These great soldiers who have given their time, efforts, services and even lives did not do so in vain. They paid the price for the freedom we take for granted on a daily basis. The reason we can drive clear across town to grab a hamburger is because of them. The reason many of us gather for barbeques today is not only in honor of these men and women but because of them. We couldn’t do it without them.

To anyone who has lost a family member or a friend serving in our armed forces I say thank you. Join America in honoring his/her memory today.

Let us also remember the words of Jesus: “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

May God be with the families of our fallen troops and with those who are serving and have ever served this great country. May God continue to bless America.
